The ''African Music Archive'' at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz has the task of collecting modern African music and making it available to science and research.It host music on all kinds of media. It currently hosts a unique collection of 15,000 sound recordings, some of which date back to the 1940s on records (shellac and vinyl records,  as well as audio and video cassettes, CDs and DVDs. Beyond academic work, AMA seeks to make knowledge about  African music accessible to a broader public.
